Plans Underway for 100th Anniversary of Scotland County Courthouse

The Scotland County Courthouse will celebrate a milestone later this fall. The facility has been serving the community for 100 years.

Organizers are planning a special ceremony tentatively scheduled for October. The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid on October 22, 1907 and this date has been selected to officially recognize 100 years of service for the county seat.

The Scotland County Community Betterment Committee has been organized to ramrod the event. The group has held two meetings. At the later gathering officers were elected. Batina Dodge was chosen to serve as committee chairperson and Kathy Kiddoo was elected as vice-chairperson. Dodge stated that County Clerk Betty Lodwegen is also taking an active role in the project.

While the committee includes a number of county officials, the project is not officially affiliated with Scotland County government. The organization has filed for official 501c not for profit status.

Plans are still sketchy for the open house celebrating the 100th anniversary for the facility. Organizers hope to have local and state dignitaries on hand for a dedication ceremony and tours of the courthouse are also being considered.

The group plans on selling a special shirt commemorating the courthouse and sales of other keep sakes, such as paper weights, are being considered as possible fundraisers. The group also hopes to publish a booklet featuring the history of the courthouse.

Donors will be recognized in the booklet as well as during the ceremony. The group has established four levels for contributors. Platinum supporters will give $250 or more. Gold level sponsors will give $100 with $50 and $25 gifts being honored as silver and bronze donors.

The donations will fund the special ceremony. Any additional proceeds have been earmarked for the repair and restoration of the courthouse clock. The committee is also investigating grants or other potential financial aid for the project.

Organizers are actively seeking courthouse history. Anyone with pictures of the building, particularly the interior, or any other historical items related to the site, are asked to contact the committee. The group is also seeking additional volunteers to serve on the committee.
