City Reduces Benefit Package For Employees in Cost Saving Measure
Faced with impending price hikes for utility services Memphis Mayor Roger requested, and received concessions from the Memphis City Council in the benefits package for city employees.
At a special meeting May 31st, Gosney requested the council adjust he cityís benefit package for employeeís insurance for all new hires.
ďWe need to stress that this policy change is only for employees hired from this date forward,Ē Gosney stated. ďNothing is being taken away from our current employees. One of our strongest assets as a city is the quality, experienced staff that we have because there is such a low turnover of employees.Ē
Currently the city provides medical and dental insurance to all employees as well as their spouse and children.
Under the mayorís proposal, the city will now only offer insurance coverage to the employee.
ďAt the current prices, this could represent a savings of about $1,000 a month, per employee,Ē he stated.
The council voted 3-0 to make the policy change for all future employees.
