Local Girl Looking To Fulfill Birthday Dreams With ‘The Wish List’

When an underprivileged child in Scotland County blows out those birthday cake candles with hopes of a magical gift, they now have a new benefactor that is working to help fulfill their wish.

The Wish List is a new community-based volunteer group. The brainchild of Scotland County R-I student Courtney Small, the organization was created with the idea of delivering a special birthday to kids in need.

“This project is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in your community,” Small stated. “All the work you do will directly effect the people of your community, so you can see your hard work pay off. You can really help better the lives of those around you by showing that you care.”

The Wish List group is planning to host fundraisers every month or every other month in an effort to generate revenue to allow the purchase of birthday gifts. Initially the group is budgeting between $25 to $50 per gift based on initial participation.

To take advantage of the program, a family member simply needs to contact Small or another member of the group and complete a short form that includes gift wishes, clothes sizes and interests of the children. These forms will be available at the Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet beginning June 11th.

“There will be no income requirement to participate in the program,” Small stated. “We hope people in need will take advantage of the service.”

The Wish List will provide gifts for anyone in Scotland County under the age of 16.

Anyone interested in assisting Small with the project is asked to contact her at 660-883-5382. Volunteer forms are available. Donors can also contact Small at this number.

“If you think this is a good cause and have time you would like to dedicate to helping others, please complete a volunteer form,” she said.

The first fundraiser for the Wish List is being scheduled for this summer. A concert is being planned at Johnson park with several local bands set to perform. A barbecue is also being discussed in conjunction with the event, which has been preliminarily set for June 23rd.

Small also is working on plans for a daughter/daddy dance sometime during the school year as well as a spaghetti dinner during basketball season. Other fundraisers likely will include car washes, bake sales, and possibly raffles, but Small added she is open for ideas from prospective members of the group.

Pending the outcome of the initial fundraisers, Small anticipates wrapping and delivering the first birthday gifts in September.
