Memorial Day is celebrated in a variety of manners across the nation. It is a traditional day to visit cemeteries and place flowers or miniature flags on graves. Businesses and homeowners break out their U.S. flags and a few POW/MIA flags can be found intermingled in the patriotic display.

For the 61st straight year, Memorial Day guests will gather on the city square in Memphis. Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars continues the tradition of hosting a special service on the courthouse lawn. The ceremony will be held Monday, May 28th beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Post Commander Donnie Middleton will open the ceremony along with program chairman James Parker. Charles Harris will lead the gathering in the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance. Karl DeMarce will provide the invocation.

The traditional placing of the wreath at the Soldiers Memorial will be guided by Clark Mustoe. He, along with Harry Laird, performed the services, presenting the initial wreath back in 1947 at the communitys first service.

The Scotland County R-I Band will perform the National Anthem prior to the introduction of the featured speaker by Judge Gary Dial.

Col. Dennis Hildenbrand will be the events keynote speaker.

The patriotic music theme will continue with James Parker singing Sleep Soldier Boy with the piano accompaniment of Connie Courtney

After Frank Reed gives the benediction, the V.F.W. members will present the firing squad and a 21-gun salute before the service closes with Taps, performed by Melinda Briggs.

If weather prevents the holding of the outdoor service, the ceremony will be moved to the V.F.W. post.
