Fire Destroys Machine Shed Near Downing
A fire Friday afternoon destroyed a machine shed at the Ralph Small residence just east of Downing and threatened the rural residence as well before firemen from the Scotland County and Downing Fire Departments extinguished the blaze.
The Scotland County dispatcher received a call at 2:44 p.m. on April 20th regarding a fire just east of Downing. A second caller confirmed that there was a fire east of Downing involving a machine shed and equipment.
A sheriffís deputy was in the vicinity and indicated he believed the fire was the Tom Reel residence, a member of the Scotland County Rural Fire Protection service.
The Scotland County Fire Department was dispatched to the fire and the first fire truck rolled from the station at 2:48 p.m.
Just minutes later the deputy arrived at the site of the blaze at the Ralph Small residence, west of the Reel property.
The Downing Fire Department was on the scene with one truck. A request was made for mutual aid response as the crew was running out of water and the fire was threatening to spread to an adjoining garage as well as the residence just east of the machine shed.
The Scotland County Fire Departmentís mini-pumper truck was the first on the scene. A hose team from this truck joined the efforts of the Downing crew and the firemen were able to stop the spread of the blaze to the garage. The siding on the west side of the house was melted off but the firemenís efforts saved further damage to the home.
The machine shed and its contents were a complete loss. The structure housed a motor home, a combine and several other pieces of farm equipment. A tractor and a pickup truck parked adjacent to the building also sustained extensive damage and a second pickup truck parked at the garage was burned to a lesser degree.
The Missouri State Fire Marshalís office is investigating the fire and no cause of the blaze has yet been determined.
