Plans are being finalized for the 2007 Relay For Life of Scotland County. The event will be held June 15 and 16, on the Memphis Square from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
Prior to the beginning of the Relay, a Cancer Survivor reception will be held at the Memphis VFW at 4:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the Heritage Band, refreshments will be served at 4:30, and survivors t-shirts will be available at that time. At 6:00, survivors will make their way to the square for the opening lap. If you have any questions, or to RSVP for the reception, please contact Chris Tinkle at 465-7322 or Tamara Knupp at 945-3993.
The Relay will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the singing of the National Anthem by Schelle Cooley, followed by a survivorís parade and the caregiverís lap. The guest speaker for the event will be cancer survivor, Beverly Krouse. Reserved seating will available for survivorís in the court house lawn.
Next on the program will be the introduction of teams. Eight teams are participating this year, and will be hosting fundraisers at the camp sights in the court house lawn including a variety of food, games, and other items for sale. Local entertainment will be offered from 7:15 until 9:00.
The Luminary ceremony will begin at 9:00 p.m. This is a time for both celebration and remembrance. Luminarias may be purchased for a cancer survivor, or for someone who lost their battle with cancer, for $5.00 each. They are available from any team member, committee member or at the Farmers Mutual Insurance Office on the south side of the square. Luminarias purchased prior to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 will be placed in alphabetical order around the Memphis Square. Those purchased after that time will be placed at the end of the line. If you are interested in personalizing your luminaria bags, please contact Leslie Troutman at 465-2253 or Beverly Moore at 465-7773 or 465-7077 for more information. You are welcome to light the luminarias that you purchase, but please remember to bring your own lighters. A special tribute to survivors in attendance will be held at the close of luminaria Ceremony.
Lip Syncs and entertainment by Cohesion, a local band, will follow. Chuck Kigar will be serving as DJ for the event.
We would like to invite everyone to bring your lawn chairs, support the teams and enjoy an evening of food, games, and entertainment. You are also encouraged to pay close attention to our public service announcements throughout the evening, and possibly win a gift certificate from a local restaurant.
