Overtime Unkind To Tigers, Again
For the second straight time, 32 minutes was not enough time for the Scotland County and Green City varsity boys basketball teams to settle their games. Unfortunately for the Tigers, for the second consecutive time, the Gophers prevailed in overtime, the latest, a 66-63 victory on December 19th in Memphis.
After seeing Green City standout Matt Ayers drop 40 on them in a 79-75 overtime loss in the Novinger Tournament, SCR-I focused its defensive efforts on stopping the Gophersí star.
Ayers scored all six of Green Cityís first-period points to help the Gophers rally from a 9-1 run to open the game by SCR-I.
Kyle Shelley scored on an offensive rebound midway through the second period for the only field goal of the quarter for Scotland County. The Tigers did sink eight-of-12 free throws during the stretch but Green City was able to rally to lead 25-21 at the break.
As has become the early-season custom, Scotland County came out of the locker room on a mission. The third period has been the Tigersí strong suit, and this contest was no different. Bryce Blomme scored nine points and Cody Musgrove added six points to fuel a 23-14 run that put the Tigers on top 44-39.
Grant Blomme scored nine points down the stretch but it wasnít enough to hold off a late rally by Green City that ultimately sent the game into overtime.
Musgrove and Ayers each had four points in the extended play to keep the tie knotted at 63-63. But as time ran down, the Gophersí Jeremiah Tarver converted a three-point play with just 5.6 ticks left on the clock to give Green City the 66-63 win.
The Tigers (3-4) were led in scoring by Grant Blomme with 19 points. Musgrove finished with 16 points while Bryce Blomme added 13.
Ayers finished the game with 28 points, converting 12-of-17 free throws. Tarver added 14 points
