Cold Shooting Night Lets Knox County Slip By Tigers

The Scotland County Tigers were on their home court Friday night to host Knox County but they may have had better luck getting through the gates of Fort Knox than they did getting many balls to go through the net. The lid was solidly in place on the bucket all night for SCR-I, which dropped the non-conference match-up 63-56.

The Tigers put up a decent point total, but one that could have been way higher with just a little better luck. Scotland County got just one three pointer through the nets all night long as the squad struggled from the perimeter. That allowed Knox County to pack its defense into the lane to try to slow down center Cody Musgrove.

That strategy worked perfectly in the first period as the Eagles flew out to an 8-2 lead. Buckets by Matt Wickert and Grant Bomme cut the deficit to 8-6 before the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to force a Scotland County timeout.

Trailing 16-9, the Tigers opened the second period with a run of their own. After Grant Blomme started the rally with a layup, Musgrove scored six straight points to put the home team ahead for the first time in the game at 17-16. A three-point play by Bryce Blomme stretched the advantage to 20-16 with 3:47 left in the first half. But Knox rebounded to pull ahead 25-24 at the break.

The lead went back and forth much of the third period. A pair of free throws by Musgrove in the final seconds of the quarter pulled the Tigers to within 39-37 with just eight minutes to play.

The Eagles launched an 8-0 run to start the fourth period as SCR-I could not buy a bucket. A pair of free throws by Grant Blomme made it 50-45 with 3:02 left to play.

That margin proved to be the mark for the final four minutes of the contest as the Tigers couldnt get over the hump, thanks mostly to the free-throw shooting of Daniel McMahon. He made nine of 10 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the 63-56 victory for the Eagles.

McMahon finished with 28 points to lead all scorers.

Musgrove paced Scotland County with 21 points. Grant Blomme finished with 12 points while Bryce Blomme added 11. The Tigers fall to 3-3 on the year with the loss.
