Lady Tigers Win Softball Tune Up Versus Canton
The Scotland County softball team got a boost of confidence heading into district play. The Lady Tigers blasted Canton 8-4 in a non-conference road game played on September 28th.
SCR-I jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning. Kirsten Johnston led off with a walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tara Matlock. After a walk by Deidra Dochterman, clean-up hitter Valerie Oldham drove in both runners with a double.
SCR-I made it 5-0 in the second frame. Megan Westhoff singled to start the rally. Melissa Cotton walked before Johnston delivered a two-run triple. She scored on a wild pitch.
The offense tallied a lone run in the third inning. Dochterman reached on an error and scored on a base hit by Kaela Cook.
Cotton singled and scored on a hit by Johnston to push the advantage to 7-0.
Canton did not get on the board until the fifth inning. Cook retired 13 of the first 14 batters she faced. A pair of SCR-I errors led to an unearned run in the fifth.
Canton made it interesting with a three-run sixth inning.
But SCR-I added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Oldham delivered her third RBI of the contest to bring home Matlock.
Cook closed out the game strong in the seventh to pick up the win. She allowed seven hits and walked none while striking out two.
Johnston was 2-3 with 3 RBI. Oldham went 2-4 and also drove in three. Cotton was 1-2 with a pair of runs scored.
