SCR-I Softball Squad Takes Third at Schuyler Tourney
Less than perfect weather conditions didnít prevent the Scotland County softball team from bringing home some hardware from the Schuyler County Tournament held September 23 in Queen City.
SCR-I finished third in the eight-team bracket with wins over Brashear and Knox County. The teamís lone loss came against LaPlata.
SCR-I opened bracket play with a 2-0 win over Brashear.
Karra Small threw the shutout, giving up just four hits and walking none in the strong performance. She fanned four batters.
SCR-I jumped on top in the second inning when Valerie Oldham tripled. She crossed the plate on a base hit by Lacey Jack.
The Lady Tigers added an insurance run in the third inning. Andrea Shelley walked to start the inning. She scored on an RBI ground out by Tara Matlock.
Game two was a 12-0 loss to LaPlata. Scotland County loaded the bases in the first inning but was unable to get a run in.
LaPlata had far less trouble scoring, moving ahead 5-0 in the first two innings. The Bulldogs blew the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning as SCR-I starter Kaela Cook struggled to find the strike zone.
Cook took the loss, allowing seven hits while walking 13 batters.
Matlock went 2-2 and Deidra Dochterman had the other SCR-I hit.
The third place game saw both teams score early. With the game knotted at 2-2 in the fifth inning, SCR-I went ahead for good. Oldham singled and scored to make it 3-2.
The Lady Tigers broke the game open in the sixth inning with four runs. Melissa Cotton tripled to start the onslaught. Shelley singled her home and then scored on a triple by Kirsten Johnston. Matlock delivered an RBI single and later scored to give Scotland County the 7-2 win.
Small picked up the victory, going seven innings. She retired nine straight at one point, finishing with three strikeouts while allowing just six hits and one walk.
