Brookfield Lands Final Blow In 6-5 Softball Loss
Scotland County’s conference match-up against Brookfield on September 18th went nip and tuck with the visitors unfortunately getting the last blow in a 6-5 loss for the Lady Tigers.
Brookfield took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before SCR-I came to bat and tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame.Kirsten Johnston led off with a bunt single. Tara Matlock was hit by a pitch. Valerie Oldham singled in both runs and came around to score when Deidra Dochterman reached on an error.
SCR-I enjoyed the lead until the top of the fourth when Brookfield scored three runs off starter Karra Small. Kaela Cook came in to record the final out of the inning.
The Lady Tigers tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning. Melissa Cotton started the rally with a base hit and eventually came around to score.
But Brookfield scored in the fifth inning and again in the sixth to lead 6-4.
Scotland County trimmed the deficit to 6-5 in the sixth when Johnston reached on an error. She scored on a ground out by Kellyn Wickert.
But Brookfield’s Ashlie Teter retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 6-5 win.
Cook took the loss in relief. She gave up two runs on four hits and struck out two. Small went 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits while striking out three.
