Indians Rally Ruins Best Played Game of Season For Lady Tigers

Coaches like players to save their best for the best. Thatís what Scotland County softball coach Terri Slaughter said she saw in her team on September 14 when SCR-I hosted Clark County.

The Lady Tigers played a nearly perfect ball game but came up just short in a 2-1 conference loss to the Indians.

ďItís hard to say after a loss, but I feel like we really played our best game of the year right there,Ē said coach Terri Slaughter. ďHopefully we can build off this effort and move forward and put something positive together the rest of the way.Ē

Clark County went ahead 1-0 in the second inning. It could have been much worse but SCR-I starter Karra Small fanned the final two batters of the frame and stranded runners at second and third.

The SCR-I defense got the job done again in the fourth inning as catcher Andrea Shelley made a nice play to record the final out and again strand runners at second and third.

Scotland County mounted its first real scoring threat in the fifth inning. Lacey Jack led off with a base hit and designated hitter Kaela Cook followed with a base knock. But with one out Megan Westhoff laced a line drive to first base that was snagged by the Clark County defender and turned into a double play, ending the threat.

SCR-I finally got to starter Kassie Kiger in the sixth inning. With two outs Diedra Dochterman singled and then stole second base. Valerie Oldham delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.

Clark County came right back in the top of the seventh inning. Kenzie Hopp led off the inning with a bunt single. After being sacrificed to second base she came in to score the winning run on a triple by Emily Stewart. Small retired the next two batters to strand Stewart at third.

Kiger fanned the first two batters in the seventh inning before Tara Matlock reached base on an error. But Kiger ended the threat getting Megan Westhoff to ground out to close out the game.

Small took the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out nine and walking none.

Kiger allowed the one run on four hits and struck out five while walking none.
