Layoff Doesnít Slow Down SCR-I Softball Squad

A week between games didnít seem to effect the Scotland County softball team, which took the stoppage in stride before pounding Knox County 13-4 to even the teamís mark at 2-2 on the year.

After opening the year with three games in four days, SCR-I had to wait seven days to get back into action.

The layoff didnít have any lingering effects on the Lady Tigersí bats. SCR-I jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kirsten Johnston led off the game with a base hit. Deidra Docheterman drove her in with a base hit before a double by Jessica Bair plated the second run of the frame. Valerie Oldham closed the scoring with an RBI single.

Karra Small singled in the second. After a sacrifice bunt by Melissa Cotton, Megan Westhoff drove home Small with a base hit.

Dochterman singled and scored on a hit by Bair in the third inning to make the score 5-0.

Knox County broke through against starter Karra Small with two runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of Smallís lone base on balls in the contest to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Scotland County blew the contest open with six runs in the fifth inning. The first six batters in the frame reached base, and all six came around to score. The big blow was a two-run base knock by Oldham.

Knox County cut into the margin with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth but SCR-I got those two tallies right back in the bottom of the frame. Kellyn Wickert walked and scored on a double by Dochterman. She scored her fourth run of the contest on a hit by Oldham.

Small struck out the side in the seventh inning to seal the win. She allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out eight.

Dochterman, Bair and Oldham were all three for four at the plate and each batter had three RBI.
