Wickertís 11th Inning Single Plates Winning Run For Scotland County

Early in the softball season, teams are often happy to get in as many innings as possible. But coaches generally prefer to schedule extra games, instead of taxing their nerves with marathon extra-inning affairs.

The Scotland County Tigers went the latter route in the second game of the year, but Coach Terri Slaughter was pleased with the results as SCR-I pulled out a 9-8 victory over Brashear in 11-innings on August 22 in the Lady Tigersí home opener.

SCR-I took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kellyn Wickert walked and stole second base before scoring on a groundout by Deidra Dochterman. Jessica Bair singled followed by a double by Valerie Oldham. Lacey Jackís base hit drove in Bair but Oldham was thrown out at the plate.

Brashear rallied in the second frame and went ahead 4-2 off starter Karra Small.

Oldham drove home Dochterman, who had led off the third inning with a walk, to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Brashear took that run right back in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-3.

Scotland County went ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning. Kirsten Johnston led off with a walk. After Dochterman walked, Bair drove home both runners with a base knock. She scored when Oldham delivered an RBI single to put the home team ahead.

Kaela Cook took over on the mound in the fourth inning. She shut out Brashear for three frames before the visitors struck in the top of the seventh for two runs to regain the 7-6 advantage.

The Lady Tigers rallied one more time in the bottom of the inning. Dochterman worked her third walk of the contest to start the inning. She scored when Lacey Jack doubled to leftfield to knot the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.

Both offenses went quiet for the next three innings. SCR-I was retired in order in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings.

Brashear mounted a threat in the 10th but left runners stranded at first and second. They looked poised to go home winners after breaking through for a run in the top of the 11th.

SCR-I came back one final time. Melissa Cotton walked to start the rally. Megan Westhoff delivered a double past the first baseman. With one out Wickert drove in the tying and winning runs with a base hit to make the final score 9-8.

Cook picked up the victory, pitching seven innings of relief, striking out nine while walking four and allowing four hits.

Oldham paced the offense with a 3-3 performance at the plate. Jack was 2-4 while Wickert and Bair each had a pair of RBIís.
