Fromm Could Continue Shouldering Scoring Load at Collegiate Level

The first words that come to mind when area sports fans mention the name Ali Fromm, generally isnít broad shoulders. The petite 5í6Ē standout from Scotland County doesnít meet the description physically but figuratively she has taken on yet another challenge where she will have to shoulder plenty of the load.

As a freshman at Scotland County R-I, Ali had the luxury of having a familiar shoulder to lean on, as big sister Meagan, helped lead the Lady Tigers to the first district title in the schoolís history. Not that Ali didnít do her share of the heavy lifting, she managed to score more than 11 points a game as a freshman starter at the varsity level.

When Meagan departed for Warrensburg to play college ball for Central Missouri State University, the load fell squarely on the shoulders of little sis.

Ali proved up to the challenge. She went on to score more than 1,000 points in her career at SCR-I (surpassing the milestone in her junior year). As a sophomore Fromm averaged 15.6 points a game before upping that mark to 20.5 points her junior year when she won the first of her two all-state honors. Ali closed out her four-year career with a 16.3 scoring clip and just the second district title in the programís history.

As her teamís leading scorer for three straight yearís, Fromm became accustomed to the burden of carrying a big portion of the scoring load for SCR-I.

It will be interesting to see if the young woman will fill a similar need at the next stop in her basketball career.

Earlier this summer Ali announced that she had chosen to attend Rockhurst University in Kansas City over a number of other suitors.

The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 4-23 record in 2006 but coach Rebecca Morrisey hopes that a talented recruiting class including Fromm will help Rockhurst make immediate improvements in the second season of the new Great Lakes Valley Conference, which includes Drury, Quincy, Missouri-Rolla, Missouri-St. Louis, Southern Indian and SIU-Edwardsville.

The Hawks lost the teamís two leading scorers, seniors Jessica Rathman and Alisha Cade. Rathman scored 13.6 points a game and shot better than 40-percent from three-point range, Cade averaged 11.5 points and 9.6 rebounds a night.

Fromm will give her new team some needed scoring and could fill Rathmanís role as a threat from long range. She shot better than 40 percent from behind the arc in her career at SCR-I.

Local fans that want to follow Fromm in her freshman season will get at least one chance fairly close to home. The Hawks will play at Quincy University on January 25. Fromm has some history on that court, as she recently brought home MVP honors from the McDonalds Herald-Whig All-Star Classic played at Quincy Universityís Pepsi Arena.

Rockhurst also is scheduled to take on Truman State on December 16, but that game is to be played at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse on the Rockhurst campus in Kansas City.
