Jody Jones Captures 2006 Demolition Derby Victory

The skies darkened and Mother Nature finally delivered some much needed rain on Scotland County this past week. Likely the only people complaining about the precipitation were those hundreds of fans packed into the grandstands at the Scotland County fairgrounds as the rain threatened to put a damper on the grand finale for the 2006 Scotland County Fair, the Scotland County Fire Departmentís demolition derby.

But despite heavy rain at times, the 17-car field kept the crowd thrilled with plenty of action that saw the derbyís first ďdouble-deckerĒ car and ended in a ball of flames before local driver Jody Jones was crowned the 2006 champion.

The precipitation began midway through the first heat, forcing the promoters to speed up the program. After the final two heats were completed the organizers decided to skip the semi-main and asked all cars that could make it back to the track to be ready to roll in one final dash for the cash.

A total of 14 vehicles made it into the ring for the finale. Despite a slick track, courtesy of all of the rain, the crowd got its moneyís worth when the #360 car of Jeff McBee sped across the track and smashed into the #44 car of Gordon Hudson. The impact forced Hudsonís car into the air, landing on the back half of McBeeís station wagon. Thatís where the #44 car remained for the rest of the event, forcing McBee to limp around the track under the extra weight.

The field was thinned by hard hits and overheating leaving only three cars in action. Kenny Lewis was forced to retire in third place as his UR12 car finally gave into the punishment.

That left Jones in the 55x car to go head-to-head with the car driven by Willy Hart of Stockport, IA. The final collision lived up to all of the hype as Hartís car exploded in a ball of flames. Hart was able to escape the vehicle without injury as firemen closed in to douse the flames.

Jones took home $540 for the top prize. Hart earned $275 for his work with Lewis pocketing $200 for third.

McBee won the $100 hard charger prize sponsored by Scotland County Lanes, the Memphis Democrat and the Scotland County Fire Department.

The Shine and Show prize for the best decorated car went to Bill Anderson and the #00 car that was dedicated to all the local servicemen and women in fitting red, white and blue fashion. Anderson won the $125 prize provided by RaceMart, Hopkins Lumber, Keithís Cafť, Off Road Tie, and Memphis Auto and Truck Parts.
