Tigers Finish Fourth At Class 1 State Golf Tourney

A solid outing on day 1 of the Missouri Class 1 State golf tournament had Scotland County thinking about a state title.

SCR-I shot an opening round 339 to be just strokes behind the top three teams in the standings after the first 18 holes of the event held May 15-16 at Island Green Golf Course in Republic.

Thayer led the event after day 1 with a 326 followed by Ash Grove with a 332 and Tipton with a 336.

Aspirations of moving up the standings turned to hopes of hanging on to the fourth spot after day two proved more difficult for the Tigers. SCR-I fell 10 strokes off the teamís opening day pace, carding a 349 on Tuesday.

That allowed Greenwood to pull within one stroke at 689 after carding a 13-stroke improvement over its opening round score but the team had to settle for fifth behind Scotland County.

Ash Grove made its move on day two, carding a tournament best 321 to supplant Thayer as the state champion. Both teams finished the tourney with a two-day total of 653, with Ash Grove winning the tie breaker. Tipton held on to third place despite similar second day struggles to SCR-I. Tipton shot a 336 and a 347 to finish with a 683 total.

Scared Heart finished sixth (342/349 Ė 691) followed by Orrick (356/358 Ė 714), West Nodaway (376/372 Ė 748) and Crocker (427/390 Ė 817).

Marcus Shalley provided the top individual performance of the tourney for SCR-I. The junior scored an 8-over-par 80 on day one and followed that up with an 81 the next day to shoot 161 for the tourney, tying for the 13th best score among the 124 individual performers.

Joe Spurgeon made the biggest charge on day two. He shot an opening round 89 and then trimmed four strokes off that score with an 85 on Tuesday to shoot 194. The sophomore tied for 47th overall in his first appearance at state.

Zach McBee finished the tourney with a score of 176 (84/92) and fellow junior Matt Wickert finished with a 181 (86/95). Senior Kyle Lister shot a 183 (92/91) in his third and final appearance at the state tourney.

Corey Youngclaus, a senior from Albany, won the individual title with a score of 147, going one-under-par on day two to erase a six-stroke deficit and leapfrog four spots up in the standings.

Day-one leader Haden Crumpton, a senior from New Bloomfield, had to settle for second place. He was two-under-par after the first day, but a second-round 81 sent him to 151 overall.

M.J. Clark, a senior from Thayer, and John Morris, a senior from Greenwood, tied for third with scores of 154.

Brian Bishop, a senior from Russellville, rounded out the top five with a score of 156.

Andy Herington, a senior from Milan, was top performer from the Tri-Rivers Conference. He shot a 159 to finish 10th overall.

The champions from the 9 district events participated in the team competition. The top 10 individual performers from each district qualified to play against each other and the district champion team members for individual honors.
