SCR-I Golf Team Headed To State Tourney, Again
For the third time in the past four years, the Scotland County R-I golf team is headed to the state tournament. The Tigers captured the Class 1 District #2 championship on May 3rd at Timber Lake Golf Course in Moberly.
SCR-I carded a team score of 324 to edge last yearís district championís Marceline by just five strokes. Schuyler County, the other district representative at state in 2005, finished third with a score of 334.
The stakes were a bit higher this year as the Missouri State High School Activities Association changed the state golf qualifiers, taking just one team from each of the eight districts.
Matt Wickert shot a round of 79 to lead SCR-I. Milanís Andy Herington was the event medalist with a score of 74. Wickert finished in the top five to earn first-team all-district honors.
Zach McBee shot a round of 80 while teammates Kyle Lister (82) and Joe Spurgeon (83) also finished in the top 10 to earn second team all district honors. Marcus Shalley shot an 86 to just miss the mark.
The top 10 individual scorers will advance to the state tourney along with the SCR-I team. The Class 1 tourney is a two-day event scheduled for May 15-16 at Island Green Golf Course in Republic. The golfers will take on the challenging 6,521 yard par 72 course for 18 holes on both days.
SCR-I has plenty of experience at the state level. Lister, the teamís lone senior, will be making his third appearance at the sportís highest level. Shalley and McBee will get their second taste of the big show, after competing at the state level as freshmen in 2004 when the Tigers finished 11th among the 16 teams. In 2003, Listerís freshman season, the Tigers finished sixth in the state.
Scotland County will face off versus fellow district champions Thayer, Tipton, Greenwood, Ash Grove, Sacred Heart, Orrick and West Nodaway.
