Sarah Garrett Wins SCR-I Spelling Bee

Sarah Garrett, seventh grade, daughter of Will and Carol Garrett, won the 23rd annual spelling bee held February 10th at the Scotland County R-I North School. She will compete in the 2006 Quincy Herald-Whig Regional Spelling Bee on March 20th, at the Quincy Junior High School. The all-school spelling bee is designed to be an educational event promoting good spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.

There were 24 students participating in the competition ranging from third to eighth grade. Fifth grade participant, Katie Howard, daughter of Darrell and Tammy Howard, was the runner-up and elementary champion. She will attend the Regional Spelling Bee in Quincy if for some reason Sarah is unable to be there.

In addition, six-second grade students participated in the local pre-spelling bee. Morgan Alexander, daughter of Stacy and Lora Alexander, was this yearís second grade spelling champion.

Lori Fulk presented each of the winners with a new dictionary. Sarah received a Websterís Universal Encyclopedic Dictionary for being the All-School champion. Katie received a Websterís College Dictionary for being the junior high champion, and Morgan received a Scholastic Childrenís Encyclopedia for winning the second grade pre-spelling bee. All the dictionaries awarded as prizes were donated by the Epsilon Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

In addition to Sarah and Katie, the other third-eighth grade participants were, third grade participants Alexis Dodge, Taylar Eggleston-Wood, Tristen Hilpert, and Claire Shannan. Alternates were Tasha Eggleston-Wood for Mrs. Alexanderís room and Rachel Duzan for Ms. Littleís room. Fourth grade participants were Hailey Dial, Jordyn Doubet, Emily Ebeling, and Betsy Johnson. Alternates were Cody Gordy for Mrs. Loughís room and Shaye Wright for Mrs. Cottonís room. Fifth grade participants were Anna Hirner, Wyatt Kice and Thomas Shannan. Alternates were Tori Whitaker for Mrs. Emelís room and Jennifer Miller for Mr. Bergesonís room. Sixth grade participants were Brock Bondurant, Brock Ebert, Derrick Muntz, and Loren Smith. Because of illness, Derrick Muntz was unable to participate in the spelling bee. Alternate, Harley Stone took his place. Logan Payne was the alternate for Mr. Jonesí room. Seventh grade participants were Samara Brush, Rod Sears, and Brett Thomas. The seventh grade alternate was Levi Woollums. Eighth grade participants were McKinsay Cooley, Jennifer Gordy, Bethanie Grubb, and Kelly Lister. The eighth grade alternate was Ti Waibel.

The other second grade participants were Kailee Davis, Caleb Doubet, Grace Garrett, Michael Howard, and Matthew Mutchler.
