Fourth-Ranked Canton Outlasts Tigers Despite Watsonís Three-Point Barrage

Moral victories donít count in the standings, but they may pay benefits down the road. Scotland County fans are hoping that is the case, after the Tigers battled back against state-ranked Canton before ultimately bowing out 66-52 on February 21st in Memphis.

After losing to the fourth ranked team in the state back in December, the Tigers likely were not looking forward to the rematch last week. If that were the case, it did not show, as Scotland County battled back from down by 20 points to give the visiting team a scare and to possibly set up a third and final matchup in the semifinals of the district tourney this week.

Early on, Canton looked poised for another blowout as Adam Potts poured in 13 points in the first period to put his team on top 22-11.

Lathan Watson hit a pair of three pointers and Matt Wickert added a trey in the second quarter but it wasnít enough to keep Canton from leading 41-2 at the half.

SCR-I started its come back in the third period, outscoring Canton 16-10 behind continued hot shooting from beyond the arc. Watson, Chris Humes, Grant Blomme and Bryce Blomme each hit a three pointer during the key stretch.

Watson continued his hot shooting in the fourth period. The senior nailed two more three pointers as Scotland County cut the deficit to as little as seven points.

But the visitors put the game away at the free-throw line. Canton made 9-of-16 free throws in the fourth period to seal the 66-52 win. For the game, Canton enjoyed a huge advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-31 free throws. SCR-I shot just three free throws the entire game.

Watson finished with a career-high 20 points, including six three pointers, to pace Scotland County (6-16). Cody Musgrove had 10 points and Chris Humes and Matt Wickert each had seven points.

Canton (19-2) was led by Potts with 22 points. Jared Shaller contributed 19 points while Jordan Ayers was held to 13 points.

SCR-I hopes to get by Knox County in the opening round of district to set up a rematch with Canton in the tourney semifinals March 2nd at 6:00 p.m.
