Fromms Buzzer Beater Undoes Rams Upset Bid

The Scotland County Lady Tigers were 3.7 seconds away from suffering only the teams second conference loss on Monday night at Queen City. But those few clicks left on the clock proved to be just enough as Ali Fromm hit a long jumper from the top of the key to snatch victory from the teeth of defeat and give SCR-I a 52-51 win over the Rams.

Schuyler County had clamped down defensively on Fromm all evening, using a box-and-one defense to limit SCR-Is leading scorer to just eight points prior to the game winner.

The Lady Tigers ran out to a commanding lead early in the contest. SCR-I used its transition game to build a 14-3 cushion in the games first five minutes as Angie Bulen had six points and Ashlee Frederick had four points during the spurt.

But Schuyler County was able to get rolling behind the three-point shooting of Tawnee Poe and Alison Burt to cut the deficit to 18-10 to end the first period.

Bulen and Kirsten Johnston hit early buckets for SCR-I to start the second period to extend the lead to double digits. However, the Rams closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to pull within one point before Trisha Harvey hit a jumper at the buzzer to make the score 26-23.

The Rams turned the tables on Scotland County to open the third period. The home team used its fast break to the tune of a 7-0 run to begin the second half.

Scotland County trailed by four before Jamie Fuller scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 30-30 with 3:58 left in the quarter.

Schuyler responded with a 5-0 run before Frederick hit a three pointer and Fromm scored on the fast break to knot the game once again at 35-35.

Schuyler County led by as many as four points early in the fourth period. Fuller cut into the margin with a three pointer. Frederick made a steal and went coast-to-coast for the score to tie the game at 42-42 with 5:32 left to play.

After Johnston scored in the paint, Fromm made two free throws to give SCR-I its first lead since early in the third period. The advantage switched hands twice more before Schuyler County appeared to take charge of the game. Scotland County had the ball with 13.4 seconds left, down by one point. But SCR-I could not convert and was forced to foul the Rams with just five ticks left on the clock.

But Schuyler County missed the free throw and SCR-I rebounded and quickly called timeout with 3.7 seconds left to play.

After the stoppage, the Lady Tigers inbounded the ball to Bulen at the free-throw line. She advanced the ball with a couple dribbles and then hit from on the wing. Fromm was swarmed by her defender and passed up the three pointer, instead taking a pair of dribbles toward the middle before rising up and knocking down the jumper for the win.

Fuller led the Lady Tigers (15-8, 5-1) with 15 points on the night. Fromm and Bulen finished with 10 points.
