Spratts 31 Points Too Much For Lady Tigers In Title Tilt

Anyone familiar with Marion County girls basketball is familiar with the name Spratt. Unfortunately for Scotland County, the sir name continued to earn its stripes for the Lady Mustangs as Ashley Spratt did her family proud, pouring in 31 points to lead her team to a 56-53 come-from-behind win over SCR-I in the championship game of the North Shelby Tournament on January 21.

Both teams got off to a cold start in the first period that saw Scotland County trailing 6-5 more than five minutes into the game. The Lady Tigers heated up as Ali Fromm hit back-to-back shots before Kirsten Johnston closed out the quarter with five straight points to give SCR-I a 14-8 lead.

Johnston stayed hot to start the second period, hitting another three pointer. But Marion County went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 21-21 with 2:54 left in the first half.

Fromm did her best to keep Scotland County on top as she scored her teams next 12 points in the second period to help the Lady Tigers regain a 29-23 lead at the intermission.

Scotland County kept control of the contest in the third period as Angie Bulen scored six points during a stretch that saw the Scotland County lead approach double digits. But a couple oflate scores by Marion County cut the deficit to 42-36 heading into the fourth period.

The Lady Tigers led 46-39 with 6:15 left in the game when the wheels started to come off. The Lady Mustangs scored the next six points to trail by just one point before Bulen converted a three-point play. Fromm converted on a drive to the hoop to extend the advantage back to six points at 51-45 with less than three minutes to play.

Spratt took over from there. She scored 12 points in the fourth period as Marion County went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 54-51.

Jamie Fuller got the Lady Tigers back to within one with a drive to the basket to make the score 54-53 with 37.8 seconds to play.

Spratt made two free throws to put her team up by three points and SCR-Is last-second shot came up short allowing Marion County to improve to 12-5 on the year.

Fromm finished with 22 points to lead Scotland County (9-7). Bulen chipped in with 11 points.
