Tiger Free Throw Shootout Set For February 4th

The success of most fund-raisers generally is solely dependent upon the sales ability of the group, but the Scotland County basketball program will be banking on its players shooting ability as much as their sales skills on February 4th. Thats the date for the 2006 Tiger Free Throw Shootout presented by Pepsi.

The sole purpose of the 2006 Free Throw Shootout is to get student athletes in the gym and to get the public involved with extra curricular activities that are offered through the school, said organizer Ryan Bergeson, the SCR-I varsity boys basketball coach.

Participants in grades three through 12 will gather at the Scotland County high school gym from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to participate in the money-making event. There will be three age divisions for girls and boys, 3rd-4th grade; 5th-8th grade and 9th-12th. Each shooter will take 25 free throws, with a champion being crowned in each division based on the highest number of made shots.

The participants will be seeking sponsors, asking donors to make a financial pledge for each free throw made.

T-shirts will be awarded to each participant that earns a minimum of $15, with the top sellers also receiving an official basketball. Winners in each division will receive a personalized shirt designating them as the free throw champion.

Following the contest there will be adult divisions held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. as well as a 50/50 three-point shootout with separate divisions for both men and women.

The shootout will generate funds that will better serve the boys and girls basketball programs and lessen the burden of paying for new equipment and upkeep, Bergeson said.
