SCR-I Falls Short In Bid To Hand Lady Birds Their First Loss
The Scotland County girls basketball team had the unenviable duty of hosting the undefeated South Shelby Lady Birds on January 12th. But SCR-I found itself in position to hand its guests their first loss of the year before South Shelby poured it on late to knock off the Lady Tigers 43-29.
The two teams found themselves locked in a defensive struggle for most of the contest.
The Lady Birds jumped out to an 8-2 lead midway through the first period. But SCR-I shutout South Shelby the last three and a half minutes of the opening quarter and pulled within 8-5.
South Shelby again opened a quarter strong, outscoring Scotland County 6-0 in the first 90 seconds of the second period. Ali Fromm scored four straight points before a bucket by Kaela Cook cut the deficit to 15-11. The Lady Birds closed the first half with a 6-2 run to lead 21-13 at the break.
Scotland County pulled within five points with just eight minutes left in the game. South Shelby ended the Lady Tigers hopes with a 15-6 run in the fourth period to improve to 12-0 on the year.
Scotland County (7-5) was led in scoring by Fromm with 13 points. Rachel Moore paced the Lady Birds with 17 points.
