Cougars Claw Way To Win Over SCR-I In Overtime

After shooting just 21 percent from the field in a first half that saw them score just two points in the second period, the Scotland County Tigers battled back in the third place game of the Highland Tourney to take the host team to overtime.

But the Cougars proved to be too much as Amber Anders calmly sank three-of-four free throws late in the extended period to give the home team the 37-34 victory.

It took the extra time for either team to break the 30-point mark, as both squads locked horns in a relentless defensive struggle.

Highland built an 11-8 lead in the first period before extending that margin to 19-10 at halftime after SCR-I connected on just one-of-12 field goal attempts in the second quarter.

The third period started similarly, as SCR-I did not score until the 5:31 mark when Ali Fromm made a three pointer. The Lady Tigersí defense did the job in the third period, allowing just four points as Fromm connected on two more shots as the period expired to pull Scotland County to within 23-19.

The lone point in the first five minutes of the fourth period came on a free throw by Jamie Fuller. The senior forward then converted on a driving move to the basket to make the score 25-22. Fromm drilled a three pointer with 2:22 left in the game to tie the contest at 25-25.

The Lady Tigers took their first lead since the opening minutes of the game when Fromm converted a drive to the basket with 33 seconds left to put her team on top 27-25.

Anders came right back and took the ball the length of the court to score in the paint and knot the game at 27-27 with 26.7 seconds to play.

Fromm recaptured the advantage when she calmly sank two free throws with 20.5 ticks left on the clock.

Highlandís Marikia Abbey sent the game into overtime when she made a difficult shot in the paint over a number of Lady Tigers defenders to tie the score at 29-29 as time expired.

Scotland County drew first blood in the extended period when Angie Bulen hit a jumper from the free throw line. Abbey then tied the game for Highland before Highland made four of six free throws to pull ahead 35-31. Fromm hit her third three pointer of the game to bring her team right back, down just one point.

But after Abbey made two free throws, SCR-I could not get the three pointer to fall in the final seconds as Highland held on for the 37-34 win.

Fromm led all scorers with 23 points on the night as SCR-I fell to 7-4 on the year. Anders led Highland with 18 points.
