SCR-I Fails To Corral Mustangs In 60-56 Loss
Close, but no cigar, or more importantly, no third win of the season. A much improved Scotland County basketball team saw its efforts to match last season’s win total slip away in the final seconds as Unity of Mendon rallied late to snatch a 60-56 victory from the Tigers in the consolation semi-finals at the Highland Tournament on January 4th.
After starting 2-0, Scotland County dropped its sixth straight game when the Mustangs charged from behind late in the game to knock the Tigers out of the tourney.
SCR-I opened the game strong, taking a 10-3 lead behind excellent ball movement that got the ball inside to sophomore Cody Musgrove who had six straight points during the opening run.
The two teams traded buckets in the final four minutes of the period with Scotland County leading 18-10 at the first break.
Unity of Mendon used a pick-and-roll two-man game to pick up the scoring pace in the second period. The Mustangs trimmed the deficit to 30-27 at halftime.
The lead fell to just one point before Lathan Watson drilled back-to-back three pointers from the wing to push the lead back to a more comfortable margin. But Watson was forced to the bench with foul trouble and SCR-I struggled to find good shots against the Mustangs’ trapping zone defense.
Musgrove converted a three-point play and Matt Wickert made two-of-three free throws to help maintain a 45-42 advantage with just eight minutes left to play.
The fourth quarter was a barn burner as the fans witnessed no fewer than eight lead changes as the two teams traded buckets in crunch time. Neither team led by more than three points until the Mustangs added an insurance bucket in the final seconds to secure the 60-56 victory.
The Tigers (2-8) were led by Bryce Blomme and Wickert, each with 14 points while Musgrove had 12 points. Watson finished with eight points and Humes had seven.
