MILDRED FLO BLAKE

Mildred Flo Blake, 95, of Memphis, MO, passed away December 10, 2006, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.
Mildred was born on March 2, 1911, in Gorin, MO, the daughter of Ernest F. and Rebecca E. Hayden Kraus.
After high school Mildred wanted to become a teacher, so she packed up and went to Kirksville. There she attended the State Teachers College. Upon completion of two years and passing the State Board of Education exam, she was assigned to the Hazel Dell School District a few miles west of Memphis.
One summer while continuing her education in Kirksville, she met the love of her life, Herbert Blake. They fell in love and married and to this union a daughter was born.
Soon World War II broke out and Herb was drafted into the U.S. Navy. Mildred found herself back to teaching. This time in Memphis at the East Elementary school. She taught fourth grade all during the war. On Saturdays she worked as a clerk at the J.C.Penney store in Memphis and furthered her education at summer college in Kirksville.
When Herb returned from the war, she worked with him at the Benner Grocery Store. She held this job as cashier until 1952. At that time she became interested in selling Avon products, which she did for 30 years. Mildred was a Girl Scout Leader for several years and cared for her father in her home for 19 years.
Mildred joined the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO, where she was a member, the remainder of her life. She was always willing to lend a helping hand in her church and community whenever needed. Mildred enjoyed her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herb; and sister, O’Zelma Nickels.
Mildred is survived by one daughter, Janet Durnal and her husband, Dwight of Mesa, AZ; two grandsons, Steve Durnal of Boise, ID and David Durnal of Colorado Springs, CO, and three great-grandchildren, John, Lanie and Halle Durnal, all of Boise, ID; and her extended family, Bill and Doris Atwater.
The family has suggested Memorials to the First Christian Church of Memphis, MO, or to the Scotland County Care Center and may be left at or mailed to Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral services were held at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, December 14, 2006, with Bro. Leon Buford and Bro. Jack Sumption officiating. Musicians were Joan Hinds, organist, and Angela Westhoff and Pastor Terry Lippstreu, vocalists. Pallbearers were Steve Durnal, David Durnal, Phil Duley, Vaughn Biggs, John Dodge, and Scott Westhoff. Honorary pallbearers were Ora Armstrong, Ted Gundy, Phil Payne, Bill Atwater, Lew Prather, and Bud Garrett. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO.
