BILL ELMO YOUNG
(10/27/1929 – 10/31/2006)

Bill Elmo Young, son of Frank and Dolly (Day) Young, was born October 27, 1925, at Edina, MO.

He is a former Scotland County, MO, resident and grew up in rural Missouri and attended country schools near his home. Following his schooling, Billy farmed with his father.

In the final years of World War II, Bill enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served as a gunner on a destroyer. Upon receiving his discharge, he returned to Missouri and drove a truck with his brother, Ralph. Bill then attended electrical school in Chicago, IL, before returning to work with his brother once again.

It was during his training in Chicago, IL, that Bill met Nadine Teter. Billy and Nadine were united in marriage on December 3, 1948, in Des Moines, IA. In 1951 they returned to Nadine’s hometown of Coon Rapids, IA, where they farmed her family farm until poor health forced Bill to retire in 2005.

Farming was Bill’s life. He enjoyed raising cattle. Bill was a 50-year member of the American Legion and served as a Union Township Trustee.

On October 31, 2006, Bill died at Dallas County Hospital in Perry, IA. He was 81 years and four days of age.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph, Chester and Jim Young, and sister, Virginia Young.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Nadine Young of Coon Rapids, IA; five children, Ruby and husband, Richard Smits of Heber Springs, AR, Gary Young and wife, Marcia of Coon Rapids, IA, Rita and husband, Gary Erickson of West Des Moines, IA, Leslie Young and wife, Linda of Madrid, IA, and Larry Young of Coon Rapids, IA; six grandchildren, Jill Smits of Searcy, AR, Amanda and husband, Nathan Cunningham of Perry, IA, Scott Young of Ames, IA, Mike Young of Huxley, IA, Rachel Erickson of Ames, IA, Heather and husband, Joel Rinderknecht of Waukee, IA; four great-grandchildren, Christina Kelly, Alexandria Cunningham, Tom and Ethan Rinderknecht; a sister Dorothy Young of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Robert Young of Lee’s Summit, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held November 3, 2006, at Ohde Funeral Home, Coon Rapids, IA, with Pastor Stephanie Simmons. Marcia Young was the vocalist and Lois Shirbroun, organist. Casket bearers were Gary Young, Les Young, Larry Young, Gary Erickson, Scott Young, and Mike Young. Interment was in the Union Township Cemetery, Coon Rapids, IA.
