Duane Courtright, 70, of Memphis, MO, passed away on October 29, 2006, at University Hospital in Columbia, MO.

Duane was born on August 23, 1936, the son of Edgar A. and Lela Clark Courtright.

On September 16, 1956, he married Verla Swartz, and to this union three sons were born, Steven, Douglas and Robert. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.

Duane was an avid woodsman, making a living as a logger for many years. He enjoyed all things in the outdoors, whether it was logging, hunting, fishing, gardening or taking care of his many animals. Duanes favorite part of gardening was sharing his produce with his family and friends.

Whenever Duane found an opportunity to stop and talk to a friend or family member he took it. Duane was well known for his gift of gab and as someone who never met a stranger.

Duane was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved to spoil his wife, his sons and his grandchildren, Brittney and Brett, any chance that he had.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven Courtright; and his sister, Yvonne Brandon.

He is survived by his wife, Verla of 50 years; two sons, Douglas Courtright and wife, Kelley of Kansas City, MO, Robert Courtright and wife, Barbie of Memphis, MO; two grandchildren, Brittney Courtright and fiancee, Ryan Hinds of Warrensburg, MO, and Brett Courtright and Kristen Williams of Memphis, MO; one brother, Elwood Courtright and his wife, Madeline of Lees Summit, MO; a brother-in-law, John Brandon of Albia, IA; and many nieces and nephews, and a large host of friends.

The family has suggested memorials to the American Heart Association or The Wild Turkey Federation and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held on November 3, 2006, at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with Rev. Terry Lippstreu officiating. Musicians were Angela Westhoff, pianist, Brett Courtright, pianist, Brett Courtright, Andrea Shelley, Kristen Williams, Lacey Jack and Megan Westhoff, vocalists. Pallbearers were David Courtright, Gary Dial, Lee Jones, Jr., Donnie Gibson, Gary Young, Bill Adams, Jeff Brandon, and Stuart Pilcher. Honorary bearers were David Brandon, Junior Elliott, Winn Hill, Fritz Vassholz, Jim Hall, Lyle Miller, and Arlo Trueblood. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO.
