GILBERT EUGENE (GENE) MILLER
(3/29/1927 – 10/10/2006)
Gilbert Eugene (Gene) Miller, 79, of Kirksville, MO, passed away October 10, 2006, at the LaPlata Nursing Home under the care of Hospice.
The son of Virgil and Nina Ethel (Weeks) Miller, he was born March 29, 1927 in Pilot Grove, IL.
On July 5, 1952, he was united in marriage to Margaret Beach. To this union two children were born. On April 24, 1972, in Jefferson City, MO, he was united in marriage to Margaret (Tade) Russell.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ethel Marie Boston and her husband, Wayne and their son, Curtis Wayne Boston, whom Gene raised; a great-grandson, Matthew Nathanial Garr; several aunts and uncles and son-in-law, Victor Frederick.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Miller of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nancy Miller of Bloomfield, IA; a daughter and son-in-law, Leisa and Greg Walter of Kirksville, MO; a step-son, Jim Russell and wife, Karin of New Franklin, MO; two stepdaughters, Carla Pulliam and husband, David of Greentop, MO and Saralyn Erwin and husband, Lon of Baring, MO. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Megan Saffell and husband, Todd, Amy Garr and husband, Mark, Lydia Walter, Angie and Amanda Biesemeyer, Erin Frederick, Holly Bogatzke and husband, Logan, Jamie and Kayla Frederick, Ben Pulliam and wife, Jen, Jessica Erwin, Ryan Erwin and Amber Hood and husband, Dirk; four great-grandchildren, Kaitlea and Ian Garr, Calvin Saffell and Kailey Biesemeyer; a half-brother, Edward Owen and wife, Jean of Carthage, IL and a host of friends and relatives.
Gene grew up in Lancaster, MO, and served in the United States Army during World War II, where he received the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Gene worked at various jobs in and around Schuyler County until 1976 when he moved to Virginia to work for Standard Register, retiring in1987. In 1992, Margaret retired and they returned to the Kirksville, MO area.
Gene enjoyed camping, fishing, and woodworking. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a devoted NASCAR fan. He was a past member of the Kirksville Moose Lodge.
Funeral services were held October 13, 2006, at the Norman Home in Lancaster, MO, with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Lancaster United Methodist Church officiating. Music was provided by Twila Mathews, organist, and Cole Tippett, soloist. Pallbearers were Ryan Erwin, Logan Bogatzke, Andrew Bulen, Mark Garr, Trenton Tallman, and Josiah Mishler. Honorary pallbearers were Ike Dotson and Ed Jay Owen. Memorials have been established for the Hospice of Northeast Missouri. Burial was in Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, MO. Military Rites were conducted by the Schuyler County VFW Post No. 5898. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, MO.
