INEZ DALE SHAW
(12/20/1917 – 8/2/2006)
Inez Dale Shaw was born on December 20, 1917, on a farm near Glenwood, MO, the seventh child of Homer and Lou Emma (Hovey) Scurlock and died August 2, 2006 at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kermit; four brothers, Victor, Walter, John and Junior; two sisters, Erma White and Lillian Eason; two sisters-in-law, Ladene and Nola Scurlock; and two brothers-in-law, Paul White and Hatch Eason.
She grew to adulthood in Glenwood, attending a rural school then graduating from the Glenwood High School. She furthered her education by attending Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College and teaching for 31 years starting at Liberty Hall, where she had been a student and Swanson, north of Downing, MO. She became the County Superintendent of Schools for a time, later retiring from the Schuyler County School District’s Title I Reading program.
Inez married Kermit Shaw on August 22, 1946, and to this union one daughter was born, Candida. Inez and Kermit farmed and raised Hereford cattle until his death in 1994 on the farm that was homesteaded by the Shaws in 1864. She was active in the Downing Baptist Church, Rebekah’s, a 4-H leader, secretary for the Republican committee and the Glenwood Cemetery Association. She helped organize the Glenwood School Alumni Association and the Swanon School Reunion. Inez’s true love of genealogy and preserving history for the next generations brought about the development of the Downing Depot Museum which she helped start. After many long hours of work and money, she helped turn it into a showplace and a drawing card for Downing.
Inez is survived by her daughter, Candida and husband, Lester Harnetiaux of Hamilton, IL; one grandson, Travis of Joliet, IL; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Her great love of family and friends and her willingness to share her time and talents will never be forgotten. She has left memories that we can all enjoy and share for the rest of our lives.
Funeral services were held on August 7, 2006, at the Downing Baptist Church, Downing, MO, with David Barton, pastor of the Downing Baptist Church officiating. Music was furnished by pianist, Twila Mathews with special selections by Taylor Mullinix and the Baptist Men. Pallbearers were Faron Mullinix, Steve Blessing, Vaughn Ruth, John Bill Eason, John Scurlock, and Charles Comstock. Memorials have been established for the Downing Depot and Downing Baptist Church. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing.
