ROSALIE C. GOODEN SPEES
Rosalie C. Gooden Spees, 83, of Memphis passed away July 2, 2006, at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
She was born the daughter of George William and Bessie Florence (Kinney) Cossel on July 8, 1922, in Scotland County.
Rosalie attended North Barker Elementary School in Scotland County and resided with her Uncle Morris and Aunt Ethel Mullenix in Memphis while she attended Memphis High School. She attended college in Kirksville for a short while and later taught at North Barker Elementary.
She met and fell in love with Hobert Gooden. They were sweethearts during World War II as they faithfully wrote love letters back and forth.
They were united in marriage on November 22, 1945 at the Barker Church. Hobert preceded her in death on December 21, 1993.
The Goodens were blessed with three children: Gerald Lynn, Janet Elaine, and Joyce Ellen.
Hobert and Rosalie owned and operated their own farm in northern Scotland County. They raised crops and Angus cattle and built every building on their land.
Rosalie was also a wonderful cook.
“She spent all her life in the kitchen and made enough food to circle the earth,” her daughter Janet said. “She could have an empty refrigerator and put together a full meal to feed all of us in 15 minutes.”
Rosalie was a lifelong member of the Barker United Methodist Church, and was active in the United Methodist Women and as the church treasurer for 37 years. She taught Sunday school, Bible School, and helped with the 4H.
She married Ona Lee Spees on April 19, 1995. He survives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert; parents; son, Gerald Lynn Gooden; two brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter, Jill Machal Roberts.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet Elaine and her husband James Fishback of Washington, MO, and Joyce Ellen and her husband Larry R. Frederick of Baring; husband, Ona Lee Spees of Kahoka; grandchildren: Gerald and wife Kena Frederick, Stanley and wife Dana Frederick, Matthew and wife Kristi Frederick, Vance and wife Andrea Frederick, Lori Frederick, Anthony and wife Christine Fishback, Christin and husband Todd Monroe, and Kris and wife April Roberts; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hannah Fishback, Seth and Caleb Monroe, Michael, Timmy and Jade Roberts, Laramie, Cheyenne, and Sorrel Frederick, Erika McBain, Travis Trueblood, Hunter, Brant, and Payton Frederick, and Colby and Emma Frederick; many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held July 4, 2006 at the Barker United Methodist Church with Pastor Ben Wheeler officiating. Burial was in the Barker Cemetery. Gerald Frederick, Stanley Frederick, Matthew Frederick, Vance Frederick, Bill Cossel and Clarence Kinney served as pallbearers.
Memorials are suggested to the Barker Cemetery and can be left at or mailed to the Gerth Funeral Home in Memphis.
