NETA DARLENE GARRETT
(7/26/1943 – 4/11/2006)
Neta Darlene Garrett, 62, of Memphis, MO, was born July 26, 1943, in Maryville, MO, the daughter of Thomas Kirk and Lola Mae (McGinness) Russell. She passed away on April 11, 2006, at home.
She married Albert E. Waddell in 1964 and to this union three sons were born, Robert, Tom, and Bill. She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Garrett, February 1, 1997.
Neta grew up in Nodaway County on the family farm near Graham, MO. She graduated from Graham High School in 1961 and attended Baker University and Northwest Missouri State College. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Northeast Missouri State University.
She was employed and served the community with Scotland County Memorial Hospital and the Scotland County Ambulance Service for 14 years. She was also employed at the Kirksville Osteopathic Hospital where she was able to help many people in their hour of need.
She lived life to the fullest and was very active in the community. She enjoyed the rural lifestyle, raising hogs and gardening. She served several terms on the Scotland County Fair Board promoting the youth activities at the fair with the 4-H and FFA kids.
Neta accepted adversity placed in her life by the Lord without complaint demonstrated by caring for one son diagnosed with cancer, the loss of her home and belongings to a fire in 1989 and surviving a devastating farm accident in 1992, which resulted in the loss of both arms. She faced life in a head-on manner never backing down or yielding.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Bill, January 13, 1998.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Bob Garrett of the home; two sons, Robert Waddell and Debbie Douglas of Memphis, MO, Tom Waddell and his wife, Anita and two grandsons, William and Samuel Waddell, all of the county of Quatar, step-son, Leon Garrett and step-grandchildren, Zach and Hannah Garrett of Kearney, MO; step-daughter, Bonita Garrett of Greensboro, NC; brother, Maurice Russell of St. Joseph, MO; two sisters, Gayle and husband, Burdett Bond of Graham, MO, Nina and husband, Bob Wiederholt of Maryville, MO.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Christian Church of Memphis, MO, or the American Cancer Society, which may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral services were held April 15, 2006, at the First Christian Church of Memphis, MO, with Brother Jack Sumption, officiating. Musicians were Ann Luther, organist, Angela Westhoff, Alisa Kigar, and Elaine Forrester, vocalists. Pallbearers were Tom Waddell, Robert Waddell, Randall Aldridge, Shawn Douglas, Leon Garrett, and Bob Wiederholt. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
