Auriculotherapy is a laser smoking cessation technique which provides stimulus to the nerve endings on the exterior of the ear. Smokers lose their desire to smoke and have few or no withdrawal symptoms.
Cigarette smoking causes 300,000 deaths per year in the United States. Smoking 2 packs of cigarettes per day costs $240 or more per month and nearly $3000 per year.
People who quit smoking have fewer cardiovascular problems, better bone and skin healing, and overall increased length of active life.
Auriculotherapy boasts an 85% success rate since its inception in the 1980s. This success is mirrored in the local population with the majority of participants reporting that they have been able to stop smoking virtually without symptoms.
Scotland County Memorial Hospital offered their employees an added incentive toward a healthy lifestyle by covering half the cost of the therapy. This event illustrates the commitment of both the Hospital and the Health Department to encourage better health for better life in our area.
