Health Department Receives $275,000 in Missouri Foundation for Health Grants

Scotland County Health Department was among the eight north Missouri organizations that have received a share of $1,306,785 in grants recently made by Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH).

The grants came through three Foundation funding programs:

Healthy & Active Communities Initiative (two-year grants to prevent obesity and promote active and healthy lifestyles);

Co-Occurring Disorders priority area grant (three-year grants to eliminate the traditional barriers between mental health and substance abuse systems);

and Basic Support (two-year allocations to help organizations maintain existing programs and services).

The Scotland County Health Department received a $93,387 grant to help purchase safety seats for infants and toddlers. The grant also provides salary support for the northeast Missouri organization.

The second grant of $175,629 went to the ďHeart Smart-Dollar ChallengedĒ program, a partnership with Clark County Health Department to increase awareness of nutrition and healthy behaviors, develop physical activity challenges and education programs for families, and provide scholarships to fitness facilities.

Scotland County Health Department Administrator Margaret Curry said the funding will help her office continue to serve the needs of the community while meeting the special need for child safety seats.

Lori Moots-Clair will administer the joint grant with the Clark County Health Department. Curry stated that Moots is expected to convene a panel of representatives from both communities to provide guidance for the program that will provide health and nutrition education for citizens over the two-year life of the grant. Moots expects to offer a variety of programs through the grant, including some scholarships or financial support for exercise opportunities such as the local fitness center, the roller rink and the swimming pool.
