School Board Fills Coaching Vacancies at Recent Meeting

The Scotland County R-I Board of Education dealt with a relatively light agenda at the September 14 meeting.

Board president George Koontz offered an informational report on the board’s recent workshop at which members reviewed school finances, discussed development plans for the building trades program and the possible creation of a school foundation. Other topics of discussion included technology needs, annex talks, as well as short and long-term goals for the district.

In other business, transportation director Dennis Robertson presented the district’s bus routes for annual approval as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The routes were approved as presented by a 7-0 vote.

Fall Conference

Members made plans to attend the annual meeting of the Missouri School Board Association to be held October 26-28 at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Trip Requests

The board reviewed three requests from staff members to lead overnight trips for school events.

Tom O’Donnell presented a request for board approval to allow four student members of the DECA group to attend the State Leadership Conference to be held at the Lake of the Ozarks October 15-16.

Katy Houston submitted a request to allow four FCCLA students to attend the State Leadership meeting October 29-30.

FFA advisor Bill Cottrell requested permission to allow 10 Memphis FFA members to attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, October 25-28.

All three requests were approved by a 7-0 vote of the board.

Career Ladder

Based on his years of service in education, Sam Berkowitz submitted a request to the board to allow the sixth grade teacher to move from Stage II to Stage III of the district’s career ladder program. The board voted 7-0 to move Berkowitz to Stage III.

Executive Session

The board announced the hiring of Shelby McAfee as a teacher’s aide. During executive session the board also voted to assign seventh grade boys basketball coaching duties to Lance Campbell and eighth grade girls basketball coaching duties to Gary Hunziker.
