Local Volunteers Help Relocate Community Clothes Closet

The organizers of the Scotland County Community Clothes Closet recently announced the necessity to vacate their prior location housed in the old Jefferson Street school building in Memphis.

Plans were made to move the goods and services to the previous St. Paul Lutheran Church education building located on Highway 15 North. This location will now accommodate both the Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet.

“This is a great transition for us, as our efforts and services can now be focused in one, convenient location,” stated organizer Trinity Davis.

Davis’s fellow organizer, Ilene Howell added, “This facility will continue to serve our customers well. I think they’ll value the convenience of our new location.”

The Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet are administrated by the Scotland County Ministerial Alliance, and great efforts have been made by the respective staffs to improve the service being offered to Scotland County residents.

Over the past two weeks, organizers and volunteers of the Clothes Closet have spent time preparing for the transition by cleaning up both sites and organizing and packing the inventory. The date of the move was scheduled for August 10, 2006, and several volunteers offered their assistance to the cause.

Davis and Howell celebrated the notable volunteer turnout. They expressed their sincere appreciation to the members of the Gorin Go-Getters 4-H group for their willingness to lend a hand. Helpers from the group were Ivy Hauk, Ashley Tague, Abby Clatt and Julie Long along with group leaders Dana Hauk and Louella Tague. Other volunteers who graciously assisted were Betty Wheeler, Judy Boyer, Trinity Davis, and Ilene Howell.

A rainy morning in Memphis delayed the effort’s starting time, but the largest share of the switch was completed by noon on Thursday.

The Community Clothes Closet will continue to offer open hours on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Many sizes of quality clothes for men, women, girls and boys are available for free.

Monetary donations are accepted from anyone willing to help defray the cost of operating the Closet.

“Everyone is welcome to stop by at the new location on any Monday beginning August 14,” said Davis. “Clothing donations will continue to be accepted at the new location during open hours.”

“Many fantastic volunteers each take their turn on the schedule regularly staffing the Closet,” stated Howell. “Anyone willing to help or with questions regarding the Clothes Closet may contact me at (660)479-5470.”
