Legion Post Holds Flag Retirement Service

The last person one expects to seeing burning a flag is a veteran of the armed forces. But if you happened past the Legion Park last week the blaze could have been seen from the road as a number of United States flags were being burned by members of the local American Legion post.

However, these men werenít holding a protest. Instead the veterans were performing a public service, retiring old flags that had been passed on to the post for the official service.

Officers from the post gathered at Legion Park July 11th to perform the prescribed ritual before honorably retiring the flags that had been made unserviceable by age.

ďCommander, since these flags have become unserviceable in a worthy cause, I recommend they be honorably retired from further service,Ē said second vice-chairman Bob Gregory.Ē

The service included an official inspection by the postís first and second vice chairmen. The post com-mander, David Kirkpatrick, performed the final inspection before authorizing the destruction of the flags.

ďA flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk,Ē Kirkpatrick stated to those gathered at the park. ďIts intrinsic value may be trifling or great, but its real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for, and died for Ė a free nation of men and women, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practice of justice, freedom and democracy.Ē

Approximately 100 flags were retired during the service.

Kirkpatrick indicated the post would continue to offer the service to the community in the future and hoped that flag owners would take advantage of the process to insure the proper retirement for the Stars and Stripes.
