Relay For Life Raises $24,000 To Fight Cancer

The sixth annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Scotland County was held on June 16th and 17th from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. A survivor reception was held at the VFW, where visiting, music and refreshments were provided prior to the opening ceremony. The survivor committee chair is Chris Tinkle. She and her committee did an outstanding job, coordinating the reception.

Following the singing of the National Anthem by Schelle Cooley and presentation of the Color Guard by the VFW Post #4958, over 60 survivors participated in the opening laps of the Relay. The Hero of Hope Award was presented to Irene Hyde, following by speakers Betty Campbell Claire and Orene Downing, who shared their cancer stories.

Nine teams participated this year. As they were introduced, the Fundraising Club signs were handed out, by Kathy Gardner, the Relay treasurer and Brenda Carlin, the ASC staff person. The teams provided a variety of food and raffles throughout the evening. The Scotland County Rotary was also on hand with barbecued pork sandwiches.

A variety of local entertainment was available for everyoneís enjoyment. Entertainment chair Cathy Campbell, did a wonderful job lining up all our entertainment this year. Preventive health messages were read during the entertainment with gift certificates from local restaurants being awarded to one man and one woman, who took the time to get their check-ups or who had quit smoking.

The Luminary Ceremony was held at 9:00 p.m., with Rick Fischer reading off the names for 584 luminaries. Leslie Troutman and Michael Moore were in charge of the Luminary Ceremony, which was followed by the Empty Table reading.

Next on the schedule of events was team lip sync or talent presentations, and the Queen of Relay contest. Three young men were willing to participate in the contest and provided some laughs for us. Connie Ward helped organize the contest.

Team games were held throughout the night, with breakfast available to team members and survivors at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The closing ceremony was held at 6:30 a.m. with participation plaques handed out to all the teams. Plaques were also given for the best camp-sight, most laps walked, and best team entertainment. At the end of the closing ceremony, it was revealed that $24,033 had been raised. This money has been raised collectively by team and committee fundraisers, luminary sales, selling of sponsorships and donations by the community. The generosity of everyone involved, whether itís a team or the public is greatly appreciated.
