Relay For Life Is Fast Approaching
The 2006 Relay For Life of Scotland County is fast approaching and the committee and teams are busy finalizing plans and holding fundraisers. The event is scheduled to be held on June 16th and 17th on the Memphis square from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
A Cancer Survivor reception will be held at the Memphis VFW beginning at 4:00 p.m. with music by the Heritage Band. Refreshments will also be provided. The Survivor T-shirts will be available at that time. At 6:15, survivors will make their way to the square for the opening lap. If you have any questions, or to RSVP for the reception, please contact Chris Tinkle at 465-7322.
After the team members take to the track, we will be showcasing local entertainment until the Luminary Ceremony begins. Over 20 local talents have been lined up to perform for your enjoyment. Also, please take this time to visit the teamís campsites for a variety of food and games ranging from pizza and walking tacos all the way to cheesecake and homemade ice cream.
Luminaries are currently available to be purchased in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a cancer victim. The Luminary Ceremony is both a time for celebration and remembrance. The luminaries will line the Memphis square and will be in alphabetical order if purchased by 4:00 p.m. on June 15th. Those purchased after that time will be placed at the end of the line. They are available from any team member, committee member or may be purchased at the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. on the south side of the square. They will be lit during the luminary ceremony beginning at 9:00 p.m. If you would like to light the ones that you are purchasing, just let us know and please remember to bring your own lighter. There will be limited quantities that night. Also, if you would like to decorate your luminaries, contact Leslie Troutman at 465-2253 or Beverly Moore 465-7077 and we will get the sacks to you.
New to the event this year is the Queen of Relay Contest. We are currently looking for gentlemen who would be interested participating in this. The Queen of Relay contest will be held after the Luminary Ceremony, and will be chosen by the crowd that night. Also new this year, D.J. Chuck Kigar will be providing the sound and music for the night.
We encourage you to bring your lawn chairs and come support this great cause.
