Local Volunteers Planning Relief Trip To Louisiana
Clean-up efforts continue in the south, s the massive undertaking following the devastating hurricanes of 2005 enter its second year. The effort will soon get another helpful hand from Scotland County.
The First Christian Church of Memphis is organizing a mission trip to Pecan Island, LA, to offer hurricane relief. The church is asking any willing workers to consider attending a special informational meeting March 25th at 10:00 a.m. at the church. The meeting, as well as the mission trip itself is open to the public, as the group is seeking not only skilled carpenters, electricians and builders but anyone willing to dedicate a week of their life to lend a helping hand to those in need.
The trip will depart May 20th and return May 27th. Workers will be asked to contribute $300 to offset the cost of travel, room and board as well as construction materials to use in the rebuilding process. A $100 deposit is due by April 1st to reserve a spot on the mission, with the remainder due by May 7th.
A mandatory training session will be held for all mission members. Workers will gather on Saturday, May 6 or Saturday, May 13 to receive basic instruction for work to be done on the trip as well as travel data and other information regarding the trip.
Pecan Island is located in western Louisiana. The town of roughly 300 was nearly completely destroyed by the hurricanes.
Workers will be housed at a church approximately 30 minutes from the work sites where they will cook and prepare meals.
In addition to performing general clean up and debris removal, the volunteers will also help build a church while aiding in rebuilding homes in the area.
The $300 cost of the trip includes food and housing as well as the construction materials or “love offerings” that will be used to rebuild Pecan Island as well as on other needs as the group sees fit.
Meals during the trip to and from Louisiana will be the responsibility of the mission members. There may be some additional travel expense depending on the number of volunteers making the trip. The Christian Church has donated the use of its bus but other transportation may be required if large numbers join the mission group.
