Economic Development Lease On Hold Pending Site Review
A new roof may be the tip of the iceberg as far as the improvements are concerned for the city of Memphis at its economic development site on East Monroe Street. Ernie Miller of Miller Manufacturing was present at the February 2 meeting of the city council and informed the board of aldermen that he would not sign a new lease agreement until a long list of improvements and repairs were made to the building.
Miller told the council that there are numerous deficiencies at the site beyond the leaking roof, which is currently under repair at a price of more than $20,000 to the city.
Alderman William Reckenberg suggested the city superintendents meet with Miller for a walk-through at the site when a list of suggested repairs from Miller and the city crew could be prepared for review at the March council meeting.
Alderman Gardner also asked that cost estimates be prepared for the proposed repairs and improvements prior to the March meeting.
The council agreed to have city crews clear debris in the building related to the roof issues.
Once the information is presented and acted upon at the March meeting, the council will meet with Miller to revisit the lease issue.
In December of 2004, the council had approved a one-year lease agreement to be presented to Miller Manufacturing, which has occupied the site for several years. The rent was established at $250 a month. The lease remains unsigned.
