Lady Tigers Avenge Loss In 53-51 Nail Biter

Is there a manicurist in the house? It was another nail biter for Scotland County basketball fans as the Lady Tigers improved to 6-2 on the season with a 53-51 victory at Green City on December 20th.

After falling to the Lady Gophers in the title game of the Novinger Tourney, SCR-I had revenge on its mind on Tuesday night. Green City handed Scotland County its first loss of the year after turning around a 10-point deficit late in the contest.

One has to wonder if that fact wasnt on the mind of the Lady Tigers as they headed into the third period leading 42-32.

The Gophers got off to a better start in the rematch. Green City led 8-1 with just 1:09 left in the first period before Kirsten Johnston got things going. The sophomore came off the bench to hit a key three pointer. She followed it up with a long jumper to make the score 10-6.

The offense came to life in the second period. Scotland County began to get the jumpers to fall as Johnston hit another deep shot before Ashlee Frederick nailed a couple of shots from the perimeter. Frederick tied the game at 25-25 when she was fouled on a three pointer as time expired in the first half. She calmly sank all three free throws with no time left on the clock.

The momentum carried over into the third period. Angie Bulen made two free throws with 6:20 left on the clock to give SCR-I its first lead of the night.

Ali Fromm then converted a three-point play before hitting a three pointer to make the score 33-26 and force a Green City time out.

That didnt slow Fromm down as she came out of the stoppage and went right back to work, knocking down another three pointer to give her team a double-digit bulge.

The two teams traded baskets the rest of the period as Bulen scored a couple of buckets in the paint.

The lead remained in double figures until Green City made one last push with less than three minutes left to play.

The Gophers began stopping the clock with fouls, putting SCR-I on the free throw line. The move worked, as Green City was able to trade two for one when Scotland County went 6 of 12 from the free throw line, making just one of two attempts on six straight trips to the line.

Still it was enough to give Scotland County a 52-46 lead with only 31 seconds to play after Bulen made one of two free throws. That was more than enough time for the Gophers to get a quick score, foul, and then hit a three pointer to pull within 53-51 with 5.4 seconds to play. Green City then stole the SCR-I inbounds pass and had two shots at tying the game only to see both shots fall off the rim.

Scotland County used a balanced attack to hand Green City (7-1) its first loss of the year. Angie Bulen finished with 15 points to lead SCR-I. Kirsten Johnston had 13 points while Ali Fromm finished with 11 and Ashlee Frederick had eight. The Gophers were led in scoring by Chelsea Rouse with 15 points.
