Green City Gets To Tigers Early in 62-51 Defeat

Green City knew the secret to beating SCR-I was jumping on the Tigers early. Two weeks ago, the Gophers pounced on SCR-I in the first period of the championship game of the Novinger Tourney. Green City took the same approach on December 20th when the Tigers came to town for a rematch.

It was a familiar face that did the bulk of the damage as the Gophers jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the games first six minutes. Jeremiah Tarver knocked down a pair of three pointers as the home team took the commanding lead.

But after a timeout by coach Ryan Bergeson, Matt Wickert cut into the deficit with a three pointer of his own followed up by a driving score that pulled SCR-I to within 13-7.

Tarver continued to fire away as the Gophers closed out the first period on top 22-12. He and Matt Ayers proved to be a potent tandem as they combined for 26 points in the first half as Green City went on a 24-13 run in the next eight minutes to blow the game open at 46-25 at the intermission.

SCR-I turned to its own guards in an effort to battle back in the third period. Bryce and Grant Blomme hit back-to-back three pointers to start the third period. Another triple by Bryce made it a 9-0 run to open the second half to cut the deficit to 46-34.

The scoring slowed down from there as the Tigers got just four points the rest of the quarter and the Gophers remained on top 56-38.

Scotland County opened strong again in the fourth quarter, this time with an 11-4 run capped by a three pointer from Wickert. The Tigers allowed just six points to the potent Green City offense in the final eight minutes but still were unable to climb out of the first half hole, and fell to the Gophers 62-51.

Wickert finished with 13 points to lead Scotland County (2-5). Bryce Blomme finished with 11 points. Tarver led Green City (7-1) with 24 points while Ayers added 19.
