Cougars Scratch, Claw Way To Win Over SCR-I
The Highland Cougars scratched and clawed their way to an 81-41 victory over Scotland County on December 10th in Memphis. The two teams combined for 40 personal fouls in a physical contest that saw the Cougars blow open a close game.
The Tigers led the game for most of the first quarter and a half before Highland used its team speed and outstanding athletic ability to make a 26-9 run in the final five minutes of the first half to take control of the contest.
ďWe really wanted to get the ball inside, something we had gotten away from the last two games,Ē said coach Ryan Bergeson. ďEarly in the game we did a good job of finding the post players.Ē
Cody Musgrove was the key benefactor as he scored six straight points to start the contest. The two teams traded the lead back and forth as Matt Wickert scored a driving hoop before Lathan Watson scored on an offensive rebound to tie the game at 15-15 to end the first period.
Highland got into early foul trouble with two starters, Tucker Martin (3 fouls) and Chase Meyer (two fouls) having to go to the bench.
Unfortunately SCR-I failed to capitalize at the free-throw line, hitting just three of six from the charity stripe in the gameís first eight minutes and just 10-of-27 free throws in the game.
ďIn the first period they kind of held the ball out and slowed the game down, which I was more than happy to see,Ē Bergeson stated. ďWe wanted to slow things down.Ē
The pace continued to favor Scotland County as the second period started. Watson and Musgrove hit back-to-back buckets to put the Tigers ahead 19-15.
But Highland responded with a 13-1 run fueled by a pair of three pointers from Andy Anders.
Speedy point guard Curtis Smith picked up the pace as he fired up Highlandís stagnant offense with eight points during the run that saw the lead expand to 14 points at intermission.
SCR-I never fully recovered from the run, as the third period was much of the same from the visiting team. The Cougars blew the game open with a 20-7 run and then coasted to the 81-41 victory.
Smith led all scorers with 16 points and Anders finished with 10 points as 11 different Cougars players scored in the game. Highland improved to 4-3 on the year.
Musgrove led Scotland County (2-3) with 12 points. Bryce Blomme finished with 11 points. Matt Wickert added nine points and Lathan Watson had seven.
