Rams Ride Third Period Rally To Road Victory
The Schuyler County Rams must have been taking notes during the first game of the December 6th double-header at Memphis. The visiting squad saw the SCR-I Lady Tigers use a huge third-period run to take charge of the girls’ game.
The Rams followed that same path in the late game. Schuyler County used a 19-3 third-period rush to blow open a two-point game at halftime and roll to the 56-37 non-conference victory over Scotland County.
The two squads locked in a defensive struggle in the first 16 minutes of play. Neither team got much offense going in the first quarter. A bucket from Matt Wickert gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead. But the lid closed on the bucket for the Tigers the rest of the period. The team defense still helped maintain a 6-5 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Tigers were a perfect six-of-six from the free throw line in the second period but it wasn’t enough to prevent Schuyler County from pulling ahead 18-16 at the break.
The slim deficit steadily grew as the Tigers went cold in the third period. By the time Lathan Watson’s jumper went down late in the third period, Schuyler County had scored 17 unanswered points to take charge of the game.
SCR-I cut the 18-point margin down to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter when Grant Blomme hit a three pointer but that was as close as the Tigers would get.
Jake Fowler poured in a game-high 17 points to pace Schuyler County (1-1).
Cody Musgrove led Scotland County (2-2) with 11 points.
