Brookfield Continues Tough Times For Tigers in 48-0 Defeat

Its a little tough to blame the schedule maker, since the SCR-I Football team plays the same schools every year, but 2005 has been awfully tough agenda with the Tigers taking on four teams that have been ranked in the Missouri High School Top 10 Poll.

After facing Salisbury, Putnam County and Clark County in the seasons first five weeks, the Tigers traveled to Brookfield on October 14th.

A loss to #8 ranked Putnam County the week before had dropped Brookfield out of the Class 2 top 10, but it didnt show on Friday night as the Bulldogs blasted SCR-I 48-0.

Scotland County opened the game on defense and quickly stuffed two straight run attempts to offer a glimmer of hope. That momentum was dashed on the next play when Brent Paalhar hit Luke Lambert across the middle for a 56-yard touchdown. The PAT kick made the score 7-0 just a minute and 20 seconds into the contest.

The Tigers went three and out on offense, punting the ball away to Brookfield.

The Bulldogs marched down field on the home teams second possession of the contest and made the score 14-0 on a seven-yard TD pass from Paalhar to Sean OToole with 6:55 remaining in the first period.

Another three and out for the Tigers offense turned into a 21-0 score with 1:02 remaining in the opening period when Brookfields sophomore running back Bryan Severa scored on a seven yard run.

The second quarter started better for Scotland County. The Tigers offense began moving the ball as B.J. Houghton picked up a couple first downs on the ground. Marcus Shalley hit Kyler Hess to move the chains past midfield. But the drive ended on an SCR-I turnover.

Brookfield returned the favor on the very next play, fumbling the ball back to the Tigers.

SCR-I was unable to take advantage of the break as the Bulldogs intercepted a halfback pass just three plays later to steal the momentum right back.

Brookfield made it 28-0 with 5:16 left in the first half as Severa scored on a five-yard TD run.

The Bulldogs insured a running clock for the second half when back-up quarterback Jerrad Holloway hit OToole on a 58-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-0 with 36 seconds left in the second quarter.

SCR-I fumbled the snap on the first play of the second half and Brookfield capitalized on the shortfield as Keith Davis scored on a one-yard TD run with 1:57 left in the third period to make the score 42-0.

The Bulldogs added one last TD as Dillon Devoy scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth period to make the final margin 48-0.

The Tigers were held to just three first downs in the first half. Houghton carried the ball eight times for 29 yards. Marcus Shalley completed three of eight passes for 24 yards. Hess made two grabs for 16 yards while Grant Blomme had the other reception.

Brookfield moved the ball with a backfield-by-committee approach. Severa led the way with 54 yards on eight carries. Five other runners combined for 113 yards in the first half. Paalhar completed six of seven passes for 110 yards.

Houghton led the Tigers defense with 11 tackles. Hess recorded 10 stops, a sack and a fumble recovery from his defensive back position. Andy Cowell and Bryce Blomme each had seven tackles and Grant Blomme contributed six stops.

The Tigers drop to 2-4 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
