Putnam County Blasts Tigers 38-0 In Conference Opener

A football game consists of four quarters, but on Friday night it only took one period of play to decide a key Tri-Rivers Conference matchup in Memphis as Putnam County scored four times in the games first 12 minutes en route to a 38-0 victory over the Tigers.

Scotland County never could get rolling on either side of the ball. The Tigers took the opening kick off but were unable to mount a drive.

Brandon Thomas set the tone for the game for the visiting squad as the senior quarterback scrambled through the SCR-I defense for a 57-yard touchdown on Putnam Countys very first play on offense. Thomas hit Tyson Alexander with a pass for the two point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 8:36 to play in the first period.

Thomas broke a 55-yard run on the teams next possession setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Tanner Michael. Alexanders PAT kick made the score 15-0 with 5:42 left in the opening quarter.

SCR-I went three and out and punted the ball back to the Midgets. This time Thomas did the work through the air as he found Matthew Brundage for a 26-yard touchdown pass to make the score 22-0 with 2:29 left on the clock.

That proved to be just enough time as the Midgets tacked on one last score in the first period when Nathan Valentine scored from five yards out to put his team ahead 29-0 with two ticks left in the first period.

The Tigers appeared shell shocked as they ended the first half with just four first downs and a mere 70 yards of total offense. That was nearly eliminated by 45 yards worth of penalties.

SCR-I never recovered offensively on the night. The defense did clamp down after the first period, and shutout the Midgets until the fourth period when the two teams turned the game over to the junior varsity rosters.

Alexander made a 22-yard field goal with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter. Back-up tailback Corrie Smith scored on a 14-yard run with 4:45 left in the game to make the final score 38-0.

Scotland County finished the game with just over 125 yards of total offense. A week after racking up a pair of 100-yard rushers at Wayne of Corydon, the Tigers could not top the century mark as a team. B.J. Houghton led the team with 32 yards on five carries while Zach McBee had 15 yards on five attempts.

Marcus Shalley completed seven of 24 pass attempts for 50 yards. Grant Blomme made four receptions for 40 yards. McBee, Kyler Hess and Colby Brown had the other catches.

Putnam County racked up huge numbers on the ground. Thomas ran for 221 yards on just 11 attempts before leaving the contest with a shoulder injury. Valentine had 87 yards on 12 attempts while Brundage and Tanner combined 67 yards on 15 carries. Thomas completed three of eight passes for 43 yards.

The loss dropped Scotland County to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. Putnam County improved to 2-1 and 1-1 in league action.
