Lady Tigers Drop Softball Opener 3-2 to Highland
Home plate proved to be a two-way street Monday night at Scotland County High School. The Lady Tigers threw out on a runner at the plate but saw the winning run cross the dish on a very close play that allowed Highland to ruin the Lady Tigers season opener with a 3-2 defeat.
The Cougars started the game with a leadoff single. Karra Small settled down and got the next two batters before a two-out double made the score 1-0. The deficit could have been larger as the next hitter singled to right field, but catcher Jessica Bair erased the run at home as she blocked the plate and received the throw from Brandi Kapfer to record the out.
SCR-I tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Kellyn Wickert started the frame with a base hit. She scored all the way from first on a double by Bair, who was thrown out trying for third.
Highland got the run right back to start the third, courtesy of another RBI double.
The Cougars made the score 3-1 in the fourth inning. After a leadoff single, the Lady Tigers committed an error on a bunt that left runners at second and third with no outs. Small snagged a comebacker in the air to get the first out. Highland got some payback when the next batter bunted. A close play at the plate resulted in a collision with the runner being ruled safe.
SCR-I cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Andrea Shelley blooped a single to rightfield. With two outs, Bair delivered another crushing double that plated Shelley before Bair again was called out at third base, despite appearing to be safe.
The Lady Tigers threatened in the fifth when Jamie Fuller singled and stole second base before being stranded.
They gave Highland a scare in the seventh. Lacey Jack opened with a single. With two outs pinch hitter Valerie Oldham hit a long fly ball to centerfield that was ultimately caught to end the contest.
Small took the loss on the hill, allowing just two earned runs on six hits. She walked one and struck out two.
The Lady Tigers scattered eight hits and also stole a pair of bases. Bair was 2-3 with a couple of doubles.
Highland made it a clean sweep with a 7-4 win in the junior varsity game.
