by Brian Neal
Memphis, MO (August 6) - Walker Motors Collision & Repair and Spilman Auto Parts presented the OíReilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway.
Kelly Shryock topped the thirty-eight other Modifieds to claim his thirteenth OíReilly USMTS win of 2005. Also in action were the USRA Caseyís General Stores Championship Series Stock Cars, B-Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, along with the Cruisers and Hornets.
Going home with feature wins in their respective divisions were Jason Cook (USRA Stock Cars), Jack Evans, Jr., (USRA B-Modifieds), Tony Becerra (USRA Hobby Stocks), Dave Hudson (Cruisers) and Joe Zrostlik (Hornets).
The 12-lap USRA Hobby Stock feature was the first to take to the speedway, with Brian Clark and Mike Shelton leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Shelton would take advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1, with Clark in second. Shelton would hold the top spot until the restart on lap 4, as Tony Becerra jumped to his outside to take the lead. Becerra then held off Shelton over the final 8 laps to pick up his third win of the season at Memphis. Mark Holt charged from ninth to finish in third. Bob Lynch was fourth, with Justin Hamelton coming home in fifth. Shelton, Brandon Symmonds and Clark claimed wins in the heat races.
Dave Hudson and Michael St. Clair drew the front row for the 10-lap Cruiser feature, with Hudson jumping out front on lap 1. Hudson would lead all 10 laps to claim his third win of 2005 at Memphis. Jeremy Buss came from eighth to finish in second, Craig Spilker started seventh and finished in third, St. Clair held on for fourth, with Tony Schulte rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Buss and St. Clair.
Up next was the 10-lap Hornet feature, with Brent Forest and Jim Hamilton leading the field to the green flag. Forest would edge out Joe Zrostlik, Dennis and Tyler Schulte by inches to lead lap 1. Forest would hold the top spot for only one lap, as Zrostlik slipped by for the top spot. Zrostlik, who made the three hour haul to Memphis, went on to lead the final eight laps to pick up his first win of the season at the speedway. D. Schulte was second. T. Schulte came from 12th to finish in third. Corrie Stott started tenth and finished fourth, with Forest coming home in fifth. Andrew Hustead and Zrostlik picked up the heat race wins.
The 15-lap USRA Stock Car feature saw Jason Cook take the pole when scheduled pole starter Mark White scratched. He was alongside Troy Alexander to his outside. On the start, Cook moved out front to lead lap 1 over Alexander and Matt Greiner. Cook went unchallenged to lead all 15 laps and claim his sixth win of 2005 at Memphis. Michael Browning came from sixth to finish in second. Alexander was third, Greiner was fourth, with Ryan Cook coming from ninth to round out the top five. Heat race winners were Mark Holt and Alexander.
Wyatt Lantz and Logan Trueblood led the field to the start of the 15-lap USRA B-Modified feature, with Lantz moving out front on lap 1. Lantz would hold the top spot until a lap 12 restart turned out to be bad news for him. On the restart, Jack Evans, Jr., who started eighth, jumped under Lantz to grab the top spot. Evans, Jr., then held off Lantz on the final three laps to pick up his seventh win of the season at the speedway. Jerry Poor was third, Jim Gillenwater was fourth, with Trueblood rounding out the top five. Evans, Jr., Chris Larson and Trueblood claimed wins in the heat races.
The final event of the evening was the 40-lap OíReilly USMTS Modified feature, with Chad Kinder and Brad McEwan leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Kinder jumped out front on lap 1, with McEwan, Al Hejna and Kelly Shryock following him in second, third and fourth.
The featureís only caution came out on lap 26. That brought the field back to Kinderís back bumper, after he had built a straight-away length lead.
On the restart, Kinder once again grabbed the top spot, with Shryock moving to his outside to challenge him for the lead. Shryock would make the pass on the outside of Kinder on lap 28 and then held on to pick up his 13th OíReilly USMTS win of the 2005 season.
Kinder was second, Jason Krohn came from seventh to finish in third, with fourth being awarded to both Hejna and Dean Mahlstedt, who started 13th, as both drivers crossed the finish line side-by-side.
Heat race winners were Shryock, Krohn, Mark Burgtorf, Jerry Connors and McEwan. While Mahlstedt and Tony Fraise claimed the semi wins.
